Greg Barker: Brits still resistant to retrofitting

Greg Barker: Brits still resistant to retrofitting
There is still "a lot of resistance" to efforts being made to retrofit the UK's housing stock, according to climate change minister Greg Barker.

Speaking at the Retrofit Salford 2011 event, Mr Barker said Brits are still unwilling to make energy-efficient improvements to their properties, despite the soaring energy bills that have been seen in recent years.

While he acknowledged financial incentives, such as the Green Deal, played a role in this, he said there are other mechanisms that can be used.

"One of the incentives that we can use is community cooperation, which is why involving local authorities is going to be so important and making the Green Deal something that community groups can really buy into," Mr Barker said, warning "eventually [there will be] sticks as well".

When it is launched in 2012, the Green Deal will allow homeowners and businesses to make energy-efficient upgrades without the upfront cost, by paying for the work through savings on their energy bills.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800377612-ADNFCR

Tell me about it! My own sister and brother, both of whom have ideal properties said it sounds great but in the next breath were unsure about 'how it would look'!

The British are either: more affluent with money than they think (or would like to think), or just plain obstinate! How, when offered 'free money' can you refuse these days. Some people's views and opinions beggars belief

'HOW THINGS LOOK' IS VERY IMPORTANT TO SOME PEOPLE - UNTIL THE COSTS OF INSTALLING
PV TILES GETS DOWN TO A LEVEL WHICH IS ACCEPTABLE THOSE PEOPLE WON'T DO MUCH OR ANYTHING ABOUT ITEMS WHICH ARE EXTERNAL - I THINK THE PV & THERMAL PANELS ON OUR ROOF LOOK BEAUTIFUL BUT I'M SURE HALF OF THE NEIGHBOURS DON'T! SOME PEOPLE PREFER TO BUY A BIG JEEPY TYPE VEHICLE THAT DOES ZILCH TO THE GALLON COMPARED TO THEIR MORE THRIFTY COMPETITORS - TG WE LIVE IN A FREE & OPEN SOCIETY WHERE WE CAN CHOOSE INDIVIDUALLY- FOR BETTER OR WORSE -THE DIRECTION WE WISH TO TAKE.
JUST KEEP SETTING A GOOD EXAMPLE ?

As Greg Barker, Minister says "One of the incentives that we can use is community cooperation". We thus need a lot more community initiatives and Energise Barnet hopes to become a trendsetter in this respect. See www.energisebarnet.org.uk

I have fitted the panels and am pleased with the results - FIT makes the economics viable and it is making me think laterally towards more electric reliance (heating). Low cost LED's and electric shower on the way !

Is it not suprising why peolpe are usure whether to commit to retrofitting their property if the Government changes it's mind less than 12 moths after introducing a campaign because it's costing too much, this is a long term fix not 12 months?
Peolpes attitude need to be converted to trust in new technology, long term house values, employment long term confidence, only the government can achieve this?
My experience of the renewable energy industry over many years I have seen the European growth, especially Germany becaause they committed to taking action and supporting the cost to see long term benefits, just because we live on island we think we know better, we need to look at others and take their advice on how to do it right before it's too late?
