Govt reveals details of Renewable Heat Premium Payment

Govt reveals details of Renewable Heat Premium Payment
Brits are now being offered money off green heating installations with the launch of the government's Renewable Heat Premium Payment.

Funding of £15 million is available under the scheme, with each household being able to receive up to £1,250 towards the cost of biomass boilers, solar thermal panels and ground and air source heat pumps.

Climate change minister Greg Barker said the initiative is primarily aimed at the households that currently rely on expensive heating oil or electric fires for heat, of which there are around four million in the UK.

Grants are available on a first come, first served basis from August 1st, with the highest subsidy of £1,250 available for the installation of a ground source heat pump in houses without mains heating.

According to the government's recently published renewables roadmap, there are 37,000 air source and ground source heat pumps currently installed in the UK, with 28,000 of these deployed in the domestic sector.

Households with any type of heating will be able to receive the £300 grant for solar thermal panels, although all applicants will have to prove their property has energy-efficiency measures in place.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800630187-ADNFCR

Why are heat pumps so highly regarded, they are expensive heating with electricity however you look at it and can only be justified, in my view, if sufficient pv has been installed to produce this electricity, and even then I think this should be used only for uses for which electricity is the only possible energy source. In an energy efficient house the space heating requirement is minute and would be better and more cheaply supplied with a log or pellet boiler or even a gas boiler with solar thermal panels supplying DHW
