Government claims low carbon travel will not kill UK air travel

Government claims low carbon travel will not kill UK air travel
Demands for sanctions to reduce the number of air flights from the UK have been dismissed by energy secretary Ed Miliband.

In an interview with the Guardian newspaper, the cabinet member responsible for the transition to a low-carbon society suggested that mass air travel and lower carbon emissions are not mutually exclusive.

In fact, the labour MP suggested that the convenience offered by flights will not need to be sacrificed because the government intends to pursue a policy of larger emissions cuts in other areas to account for the aviation sector.

Although he conceded that flying could become more expensive as Britain works towards G8 targets to cut emissions by 80 percent by 2050, Mr Miliband added that it is imperative the travel industry remains inclusive.

"If you did 80 percent cuts across the board, as some people have called for on aviation, you would go back to 1974 levels of flying," he told the paper. "I don't want to have a situation where only rich people can afford to fly."

So far, the government has pledged to reduce aviation emissions to 2005 levels by 2050.

The newspaper suggested that more action could be taken to lower the number of cars on the road and improve loft insulation in residential homes in order to meet the 80 percent target while allowing mass flights to continue.

Leo Hickman suggests that Ed Milliband has fallen for one of the aviation industry's many strategies for self-preservation: the class argument.
