Electric car travels Pan-American Highway

Electric car travels Pan-American Highway
An all-electric supercar designed by Imperial College London has completed a 26,000 km journey across the Americas.

The team from the university drove the Radical SRZero down the Pan-American Highway - across 14 countries in 140 days.

Before the journey, nine months were spent upgrading the vehicle, donated by Radical, to ensure the electric motor and batteries would withstand the harsh conditions, which included sub-zero temperatures, scorching heat and heavy tropical downpours.

Alexander Schey, Racing Green Endurance project manager, said the journey presented an opportunity to educate people on the viability of electric vehicles.

"At every stop we were surrounded by people from all different backgrounds – from curious businessmen in San Francisco to a 200-strong crowd of onlookers including local farmers at the Guatemalan border.

"It is a great way to begin a conversation and to tell everybody more about electric vehicles," he told Imperial Colleges' official website.

Toyota announced this week that it is planning to release 11 new hybrid vehicles and a rechargeable Prius model as part of its efforts to stay at the forefront of low carbon vehicle technology.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800242928-ADNFCR
