DECC grants deep geothermal projects funding

DECC grants deep geothermal projects funding
The Department of Energy and Climate Change has announced the three projects which will share £1.1 million from the second round of the Deep Geothermal Challenge Fund.

Keele University was the biggest beneficiary from the latest round of funding, receiving £500,000 for a renewable energy project to drill a 1,200m bore hole to provide power for its sustainable campus.

Some £400,000 was granted to a project run by Newcastle and Durham University at the Science Central development in the middle of Newcastle. The funds will go towards the drilling, hydraulic testing and geophysical logging of a 2km bore hole at the site.

Cofely District Energy Limited received the remaining £200,000 of funding to contribute towards the refit of the deep geothermal well in Southampton.

Commenting on the latest round of funding, energy and climate change minister Greg Barker said: "I want to ensure that geothermal energy – which is both renewable and can be produced locally – can become one of the energy technologies of the future."

The first round of funding looked at deep geothermal power, while the latest grants were focused only on heat.

Last month, the European Union issued a first call of proposals for its NER300 fund, which will be used to support eight carbon capture and storage and 34 renewable energy projects.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800308755-ADNFCR

If the cost economics also favors, geothermal energy should be one of the sustainable sources of energy for the future. http://jdbapat.blogspot.com
