Crystal for capturing carbon developed
Scientists in Australia have created a crystal capable of absorbing high levels of carbon dioxide that could be used within power stations.

A team at the University of Sydney, led by Dr Deanna D'Alessandro, created the molecular structures full of minute holes which are able to filter and capture gases such as carbon dioxide. The crystals can also be used to store hydrogen.

Dr D'Alessandro said that the crystals are more advanced and robust than those currently used and can withstand the hot, wet conditions inside the power stations "where we want to actually capture the carbon dioxide and then regenerate the materials".

"We want to get the material back at the end of the day and be able to reversibly capture and release carbon dioxide," the scientist explained.

She added that power stations are interested in using the crystals as they use far less energy to capture the carbon than the other processes currently available.

The energy sector in Australia currently accounts for 70 percent of the country's greenhouse gas emissions.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800061821-ADNFCR
