CBI: More must be done to combat climate change

CBI: More must be done to combat climate change
Climate change is now a central feature in UK board rooms, but Britain must do more to combat the risks it presents, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has warned.

Richard Lambert, general director of the CBI, speaking at the body's climate change summit, said he believes there are three main reasons why action on environmental sustainability has been delayed in the UK.

Firstly, Mr Lambert said that the global financial crisis meant "financial stability today has had to take priority over environmental sustainability tomorrow".

He added that customers "have been slow to modify their patterns of behaviour" due to a distrust of the science surrounding climate change and a feeling that companies have been "unjustifiably" promoting their green credentials.

Finally, he went on to say that the change in government meant some green policies had altered or were taking longer to enact, but added that the coalition is equally as committed to fighting climate change as the labour government.

Energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne also made a speech to the CBI this week, in which he admitted that implementation of the Carbon Reduction Commitment Scheme had 'fallen short of the ideal'.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800245590-ADNFCR

The money system as is will never provide "financial stability", which by implication means we will never give environmental sustainability the priority it needs until it is too late. We can, however, choose to do things differently. http://www.positivemoney.org.uk/
