Building industry 'needs zero-carbon definition'

Building industry 'needs zero-carbon definition'
The building industry is still without a comprehensive definition for zero-carbon properties that will allow it to prepare for the future, a new report has claimed.

Compiled by Knight Frank, the Green Homes 2010 report suggests that there is some way to go if the housebuilding industry is to meet the zero-carbon standard for new-build properties by 2016.

The report suggested there was a "mismatch" between the need for zero-carbon new homes and the requirement for increased development volumes.

It also found that it is also possible that the higher build costs created by the Code 6 standard could lead to a decrease in land values.

Liam Bailey, head of residential research at Knight Frank, said that the 2016 goal is "beginning to look distinctly unrealistic".

This is "not least because the government itself has not even managed to agree what zero carbon actually means," he added.

Commenting after the release of the report, Anwar Harland-Khan, chief executive of Sustain Worldwide, said that there is already growing demand for green homes and this will "undoubtedly increase".  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800111243-ADNFCR

Having just done an eco-renovation to make a 1990's bungalow zero carbon, I echo the senitiments in this article. As well as understanding and agreeing what is meant by 'zero carbon', few builders have expertise in this area.

How is it possible to understand something that, as yet, has not been defined?
