British Sugar plans carbon recovery and liquefaction plant

British Sugar plans carbon recovery and liquefaction plant
British Sugar has announced that it plans to develop a carbon recovery and liquefaction plant at its bioethanol facility in Wissington.

The company has joined forces with Air Liquide for the project, which is due to be commissioned in summer 2011.

It is expected that the plant will be able to recover 70,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the natural fermentation process.

The plant will purify and liquefy the carbon dioxide left over after the manufacturing process, instead of releasing it directly into the atmosphere.

Air Liquide currently operates similar projects in the north-west and north-east of England and Scotland.

British Sugar claims the development of the plant will help it significantly reduce its carbon emissions and improve its sustainability.

It claims the new recovery and liquefaction facility will allow the Wissington plant to be "one of the leading environmentally-performing plants in the world".

The company was the first sugar manufacturer to calculate its carbon footprint using the PAS 2050 method. Each gram of product from the company produces 0.6g of carbon. ADNFCR-1235-ID-800101364-ADNFCR

What will it do with the captured carbon? Could it take advantage of technology that is becoming available to convert the CO2 into fuels such as petrol and diesel via a process like or similar to that adopted by Joule? http://www.jouleunlimited.com/
