BA to build world's first biofuel plant for aircraft

BA to build world's first biofuel plant for aircraft
British Airways has announced plans to build the world's first biofuel plant for aviation fuel by 2014.

The factory, expected to be in East London, will annually convert 500,000 tonnes of waste into green jet biofuel.

Willie Walsh, the company's chief executive, said: "This unique partnership with Solena will pave the way for realising our ambitious goal of reducing net carbon emissions by 50 percent by 2050.

"We believe it will lead to the production of a real sustainable alternative to jet kerosene. We are absolutely determined to reduce our impact on climate change and are proud to lead the way on aviation's environmental initiatives."

According to the company, the plant can produce more than double the amount needed to make all of its flights at London City Airport carbon neutral.

Local authorities currently pay £40 tax for each tonne of landfill – a price which is expected to rise to £72 per tonne within three years.

Based on the target of converting 500,000 tonnes for aviation fuel, local authorities could save up to £36 million in landfill costs.
