Poor regulatory framework 'affecting smart grid development'

Poor regulatory framework 'affecting smart grid development'
The poor regulatory framework surrounding smart grids is hampering the global development of the infrastructure, a new report suggests.

Conducted by Accenture and the World Economic Forum, the report claims that utilities companies are finding it difficult to make a business case for smart grids because "regulatory incentives are failing to reflect the low carbon agenda".

The fragmentation of deregulated energy markets was named as a particular barrier.

Consumers were also said to be hesitant about smart grid technology due to concerns about data security and privacy and because the benefits of the technology have not been made clear.

David M Rouls, managing director at Accenture Smart Grid Services, said: "Regulatory conditions must be changed to reward investors for the risks they face and to encourage utilities to integrate multiple low carbon technologies to demonstrate the art of the possible for smart grids."

Three recommendations were made in the report which related to utilities companies sharing data with authorities to improve regulation, pilots being conducted with firm objectives and parameters and improvements to customer engagement.

Establishing a smart grid in the UK, alongside rolling out smart meters, was one of the key policies laid out in the coalition's programme for government.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800061828-ADNFCR
