Plans unveiled for 295MW biomass power plant in England

Plans unveiled for 295MW biomass power plant in England
Plans have been published today (August 10th) for a biomass power generation facility in the north-east of England that would be capable of providing electricity to more than half a million homes.

Due to be situated in the Port of Tyne near to Newcastle, the 295MW renewable energy facility project is the second such scheme to be undertaken by MGT Power.

The company, which expects to have the industrial power facility up-and-running by 2014, said that it will be capable of providing clean energy to more than 600,000 homes once it is fully operational.

Chris Moore, director of MGT Power, said: "With the government committed to more renewable electricity generation over the next decade, our Tyne biomass project along with our consented scheme at Teesport will make a significant contribution to [the] targets."

He added that large-scale biomass projects have the potential to match the power generation of the largest windfarms.

MGT Power has outlined the details of its latest scheme to a number of organisations, including North Tyneside Council, the Environment Agency and the Department of Energy and Climate Change.
