Plans announced for pioneering commercial biofuel flight

Plans announced for pioneering commercial biofuel flight
Virgin Atlantic has announced plans for what will be the world's first flight on biofuel by a commercial aircraft.

The demonstration journey, to be attempted next month, will see one of the airline's Boeing 747s travel between London Heathrow and Amsterdam airports using a sustainably-produced biofuel.

Announcing the pioneering flight, the company's president, Sir Richard Branson, claimed it was further proof of the Virgin Group's commitment to encouraging both low-carbon aviation and greener business practices in all sectors.

"This breakthrough will help Virgin Atlantic to fly its planes using clean fuel sooner than expected," Sir Richard said, in a statement. "The demonstration flight next month will give us crucial knowledge that we can use to dramatically reduce our carbon footprint."

"Virgin Group pledged to invest all its profits from its transportation companies towards developing clean energy and with this breakthrough we are well down the path to achieving our goals."

In 2006, the Virgin Group established Virgin Fuels, a subsidiary company that aims to develop new fuel technologies, and biofuels in particular.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18425916-ADNFCR
