Pioneering low carbon challenge set by national energy supplier

Pioneering low carbon challenge set by national energy supplier
Community projects across the UK will compete to be the greenest for a £100,000 prize from a national supplier.

British Gas's 'Green Streets' challenge will see the groups race to reduce their carbon emissions, generate their own energy and teach nearby communities their energy saving skills.

The company is investing approximately £2 billion to help support the project, the results of which are being independently monitored by thinktank the Institute of Public Policy Research.

Residents of the remote Scottish island Eilean Eisdeal will be fitting a wind turbine and a ground source heat pump to power their village hall, while a team in Lincolnshire are installing renewable energy technologies to power a local nursery, family and community services.

Ben Fogle, who was famously in the reality show Castaway, is spokesperson for the venture.

He said: "If Britain is going to meet its tough carbon reduction targets, we need to look at new ways of helping people cut their energy consumption and reduce emissions.

"Ten years on from my experience on Taransay, I'm particularly excited to see a remote Scottish island installing technology which will help the community towards a more sustainable existence."
