Offshore windfarm contract signed
Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) and construction company Fluor have formed a partnership to build the world's largest offshore windfarm in Suffolk.
The Greater Gabbard project will see the construction of 140 wind turbines 25km off the Suffolk coast, each turbine will be capable of producing 3.6MW of electricity. The venture will also see the construction of a new substation top be built near Sizewell.
When finished the project is expected to create enough energy to power 415,000 homes through its connection to the national grid.
John Hutton, UK Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, said: "This investment in Greater Gabbard is very welcome and a prime example of the increasing number of renewable projects that are now taking place across the UK."
SSE is one of the largest suppliers of energy in the UK, in related news; the company recently invested a 21 per cent stake in Logan Energy, a newly formed UK-based energy supplier.
