Offshore renewables 'will not take off in Scotland for a decade'
Offshore renewable energy projects in Scotland are unlikely to "really take off" until almost 2020, Scottish Renewables has claimed.

The comments come as the organisation releases the policy paper Driving the Low Carbon Economy: Onshore Wind, in which it details that onshore wind farms hold much of the responsibility for the expansion of renewable power in the country.

Rosie Vetter, onshore wind policy manager at the body, said: "It is crucial that [the] government ensures a speedy and efficient planning system, grid connections to transport power at a competitive price and certainty over long term support for the sector."

Scottish Renewables also released the results of an opinion poll which found that more than three-quarters of people in the country are in support of wind farms.

Some 78 percent of people said they were "crucial" to helping Scotland meet its energy needs, which is an increase of five percentage points from when the survey was last conducted five years ago.

First minister Alex Salmond announced last month that he was increasing Scotland's renewable energy target from 50 percent to 80 percent by the year 2020.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800125781-ADNFCR
