Obama puts his weight behind US climate bill
Barack Obama is willing to stake his political reputation in order to ensure that his climate change bill is passed through Congress, it has been claimed.
According to the Guardian, the US president will intervene in the matter himself if he feels that the new regulations on carbon dioxide emissions will not be passed before world leaders meet for environmental talks in Copenhagen in December.
Nancy Sutley, chairwoman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality and a key ally to the president on climate change, told the paper that he will use his personal popularity to rally support in Congress.
She said: "What [Obama] has been saying consistently is that he wants a bill and that this represents a very important step forward.
"When the bill is further along in the legislative process there are some things where it may make a difference in expressing a strong view."
The central aspect of the bill is a set of laws on the reduction of national emissions levels for CO2 and other greenhouse gases.
However, the proposed legislation has come under fire in some quarters for not being strict enough, with criticisms levelled at its target of a 17 percent reduction in 2005 emissions levels by 2020.http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/jun/02/obama-c...
