Nottingham Trent named UK's greenest university

Nottingham Trent named UK's greenest university
Nottingham Trent has been named as the greenest university in the UK in the People & Planet's Green League 2011.

The establishment beat 142 other institutions to take the top spot on the league table, which ranks universities on their environmental and sustainability credentials.

Also performing well were Gloucestershire, Worcester, Plymouth, Bournemouth and Greenwich, but strong recycling rates and renewable energy rates coupled with successful carbon management policies help Nottingham Trent to first place for the second consecutive year.

Major improvements were said to have been seen across the university sector as a whole, with 57 percent having now put in place carbon management plans.

An 8.3 percent increase was said to have been seen in institutions generating their own energy on site, while there was a ten percent rise in recycling and energy efficiency strategies being implemented in halls of residence.

However, emissions have still increased 3.9 percent on 2005 levels.

Louise Hazan, who compiled People & Planet's Green League 2011, said: "This year's results show the sector is making a clear transition towards low-carbon, sustainable operations."

People & Planet is a student-run organisation with groups at 71 UK universities and colleges.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800577819-ADNFCR
