Nine vehicles to be covered by Plug-In Car grant

Nine vehicles to be covered by Plug-In Car grant
The Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the Smart fortwo electric drive and the Peugeot iOn are to be the first vehicles available on the government's Plug-In Car grant, it has been announced.

From January 1st, the government will be offering subsidies of up to £5,000 off qualifying low carbon vehicles, the first of which will be available for delivery from late January.

In total, nine cars will be covered by the scheme, including the long-awaited Nissan Leaf and the Tata Vista, both of which will be available in March.

Nissan's all-electric Leaf was recently named as the 2011 European Car of the Year – a first for an electric car.

The Vauxhall Ampera, the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid the Chevrolet Vault and the Citroen C-Zero are also eligible vehicles, with all but the latter set to hit the market in early 2012.

Citroen's C-Zero has so far been penned in for release in early 2011.

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said: "2011 could be remembered as the year the electric car took off."

Funds have also been granted for the extension of the plugged-in places scheme to five additional areas - the Midlands, Greater Manchester, East of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The areas currently taking part in the scheme are London, Milton Keynes and north-east England. ADNFCR-1235-ID-800289696-ADNFCR
