New study shows overall cleanliness of UK has declined
New figures have shown that the south-west remains England's cleanest and tidiest region for the third year in a row.

The latest survey from Keep Britain Tidy of 12,000 public sites across 54 council areas found that ratings for most regions decreased in 2009, but overall there had been an improvement in litter standards across the country of six percent.

However, poorer standards of cleanliness–judged from incidences of dog mess, leaf fall and gum staining – meant that most regions' scores were the lowest in four years.

The south-west came in at 70 percent, with the south-east following at 68 percent. Yorkshire and Humber was the only region to show an improvement, with an increase in overall standards of three percent at 68 percent.

There were also fewer supermarket carrier bags on the street, a fact attributed to initiatives from supermarkets – however there was an increase in the number of plain plastic bags.

According to the findings, smoking related litter remains the biggest 'blight' on the streets, but generally most types of litter were less prevalent in the sites examined in the Defra-funded study.
