New homes 'are more eco'

New homes 'are more eco'
Buying new homes could be the best way to be energy efficient, it has been claimed.

Newly-built properties have more energy-saving features, according to Kevin Murthwaite, sales and marketing director at McDermott Homes.

Mr Murthwaite claimed that many homeowners are surprised by how low their energy bills are.

"Most homebuyers are simply unaware of how energy efficient new homes are," he said.

"Heating systems and insulation alone makes them four times more energy efficient than older properties, significantly cutting fuel costs," he added.

In addition, insulation ensures that houses are cooler in the summer and warm in winter, while other benefits include keeping noise levels down.

It has been suggested by Tim Anderson of Dockleaf housebuilders recently that the government should encourage the adoption of renewable energy features by homebuilders through grants.
