New gasification plant under construction

A new type of gasification plant, the first of its kind in the UK, is being built on the Isle of Wight.

It is being constructed by Norwegian firm Energos and will convert waste into gas by way of a thermal treatment process.

Partially funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the plant is part of the department's New Technology Demonstrator Programme.

The company's Tony Grimshaw told the Environmental Data Interactive Exchange (EDIE): "Sensible recycling is the backbone of any waste strategy, but there will always be some waste that can't be recovered and this is where gasification technology proves its worth."

Enough power will be generated for more than 2,000 homes. Energos, which also runs facilities in Germany and Norway, has spent around £4 million on the project.

Meanwhile, Isle of Wight recycling firm LA Recycling, based in Newport, has received massive interest in its services since green issues entered the political spotlight.

The firm recycles businesses' rubbish for free. Director Tony Lewis told Solent TV: "There's actually quite a bit of money in rubbish you know - one man's trash really is another man's treasure."

Hi, just a quick note to say that there's a useful list of commercial UK gasifiers available here:

Hope that's helpful.
