New Australian PM 'should focus on cutting emissions'

New Australian PM 'should focus on cutting emissions'
There are hopes that Australia's new prime minister could help improve the country's environmental record.

Julia Gillard was named as the new leader this week after Kevin Rudd stepped aside following a dip in popularity, which led some to believe the party would not win the next election.

In her first speech as prime minister Ms Gillard said she believes in climate change and that humans are contributing to the problem.

Earlier this year, Mr Rudd shelved the country's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme until 2013 at the earliest. The programme was initially intended to be up and running by 2011 and would have required businesses to purchase permits for carbon emissions.

The decision was taken due to political opposition and a lack of global action on climate change, according to Mr Rudd.

Writing on its blog, Greenpeace Australia Pacific said that the first steps Ms Gillard should take would be to move subsidies from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, introduce a carbon levy and limit emissions from new power stations.

I don't see it being any different Penny Wong is still in the same position, and turned down an opportunity to have the coal fired power stations change with a new technology that would produce ZERO emission's, yes no coal, no Gas, the Victorian State that has the dirtiest coal fired power station did the same. So why should she be any different. Private enterprise runs the power station and yes one of them is a British company! and they do not care.
There is hope a new project to give homes there own generating capacity, and at no running costs, so the power companies can get stuffed.
