New £40m initiative to boost UK wind-power

New £40m initiative to boost UK wind-power
A new £40 million initiative has been launched, aiming to promote the use of offshore wind-power around the UK

The collaboration between the Carbon Trust and the Energy Technology Initiative will focus on cost reduction in the provision of offshore wind energy, as well as supporting innovation in the sector.

As part of the plan, both organisations announced that they will look to secure additional funding from other organisations, in particular companies with expertise in sectors such as offshore oil and gas.

"Offshore wind represents one of our best shots for delivering vast amounts of carbon free power over the coming years and also represents a huge economic opportunity for UK plc," said Tom Delay, chief executive of the Carbon Trust.

"By working closely with manufacturers, developers and companies throughout the supply chain we aim to catalyse innovation and push down costs," he added.

Last week, the government announced it plans to increase UK offshore wind power capacity to match the current domestic electricity needs by 2020.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18399039-ADNFCR
