Nationwide smart meter rollout kicks off
Energy firm First:Utility has announced it is commencing the nationwide rollout of gas and electricity smart meters to its customers.
It is the first firm in the UK to take such action and follows a regional push last year.
First:Utility chief executive Mark Daeche: "Households across the UK can now take advantage of the benefits that smart meters bring - from increased visibility of their energy usage through to accurate bills – all in all putting these householders in control of their energy usage."
A recent YouGov poll highlighted that 48 percent of UK customers want to have smart meters fitted within the next 12 months, with more than two-thirds of respondents saying that their energy provider should foot the bill for installing the smart meters.
First:Utility's smart meters come free with its Smart as Standard tariff.
The government is aiming to rollout smart meters to every home in the UK by 2020.
