Motorways lights to be turned off to save CO2

Motorways lights to be turned off to save CO2
The Highways Agency is to permanently turn off the lights on three stretches of motorway in an effort to reduce carbon emissions.

From March 29th, sections of the M58, M65 and M66 will have their lighting switched off between midnight and 5am, although junctions will remain lit.

Derek Turner, director for the Highways Agency, said lights have been switched off since 2009 on certain stretches of highway and this has not been shown to have a negative impact on safety or driver behaviour.

"We are confident we can now begin to permanently switch off motorway lights at certain sites," he added.

Mr Turner said the measure should save 1,000 tonnes of CO2 a year over the three stretches of road. Further sites where the lights could be switched off in future are continuing to be assessed.

Last year the Highways Agency turned off the lights on a section of the M6 in Lancashire, which it was anticipated could achieve up to a 40 percent saving in CO2 emissions.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800475832-ADNFCR
