More firms must 'report environmental data to govt guidelines'
Too many companies are not reporting their environmental performance in accordance with government guidelines, according to the Environment Agency.

Research commissioned on behalf of the department found just 25 percent made quantified disclosures in line with official guidance.

Compliance was higher among measurements for energy and climate change (22 percent), but the figures were much lower for waste and water usage at 12 percent and 10 percent respectively.

The report found 67 percent were now offering quantified data on at least one of the three environmental report indicators, up from 42 percent in 2006, but more still needs to be done.

Environment Agency chief executive Paul Leinster said businesses which have an accurate measure of their green performance place themselves in a better position for reducing them.

"The increasing financial significance of many environmental risks and opportunities means that now more than ever investors need clear, comparable environmental information to help them decide where to invest their money," he added.

Large public and private sector companies will be required to make their first disclosures under the Carbon Reduction Commitment in July, but PwC recently warned many are unprepared for collecting the data.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800523956-ADNFCR
