MITEI calls on US to pursue CCS retrofit for coal stations

MITEI calls on US to pursue CCS retrofit for coal stations
The US must focus on reducing the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by its existing coal plants if it is to have any hope of reaching emissions targets.

That is according to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Energy Initiative (MITEI), which has published a report calling for coal-fired power stations in the US to be retrofitted with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.

Professor Ernest Moniz, director of the organisation and former undersecretary of the US Department of Energy, called for a "large, focused federal programme" to encourage development and demonstration of commercially-viable CCS systems.

"There is no credible pathway toward prudent greenhouse gas stabilization targets without CO2 emissions reduction from existing coal power plants," he said.

"We urgently need technology options for these plants and policies that incentivize implementation."

The MITEI report called for research and development spending to be focused on making post-combustion CO2 capture a more cost-efficient exercise.

Last week, the UK government announced a consultation on its plans to retrofit coal-burning power stations with CCS.

The Department of Energy & Climate Change forecast that carbon sequestration will contribute up to £4 billion to the economy annually by 2030.
