Manufacturers boosting confidence in electric cars

Manufacturers boosting confidence in electric cars
Mainstream manufacturers moving into the low carbon vehicle space is increasing confidence in electric cars, it has been claimed.

Robert Hokin, chief executive of ecoConnect CIC, said consumers are likely to hold the view that more niche manufacturers are less reliable, however the entrance of Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi is improving confidence.

Mr Hokin also said the Plug-In Car Grant "certainly doesn't hurt" the low carbon vehicle industry in the UK, as many drivers are turning to electric cars for their economic benefits as a result of high fuel prices.

The Plug-In Car Grant was introduced in January of this year and currently covers the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Smart Fortwo, Peugeot iOn, Nissan Leaf, Tata Vista and Citroen CZero, with more set to go on sale in January 2012.

"It's got to be economically viable or there's no point. There may be a part of the population that thinks it's desirable to be green or to be eco-aware, but at the end of the day, it's down to pocket books and the economies of usage," he added.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800624554-ADNFCR

"It's got to be economically viable or there's no point."

But would it be economically viable without UK government grants at the retail end and £1.5 billion USA input at the OEM end ?

I do not think that question will be answered until the first round of vehicles have matured or expired and we fully understand the values costs of second use packs.

Can't wait for electric vehicles to become affordable and usable (charging, range, etc.)
