Low Energy Victorian Home launched

Low Energy Victorian Home launched
A Victorian council home has had energy efficiency devices installed to cut its carbon emissions by 80 per cent.

The terrace house in Camden has been fitted with extensive insulation, photovoltaic solar panels and draught proofing, among other measures, to cut its emissions and energy bills in the process.

Working with the Sustainable Energy Academy, Camden council created the Low Energy Victorian House, which will now be open to the public for visits every Sunday until October from 2pm to 5pm.

According to the borough, the home is one of 4.4 million around the country built before 1919 which emit twice as much as buildings constructed to today's standards.

The home used to emit 20 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year and the improvements have cut that figure to 3.8 tonnes.

John Doggart, chairman of the SEA, has also noted that the new additions to the home will reduce its energy bills by up to £1,000.

Since 1997, emissions from UK homes have risen by five per cent. The government has set a target of cutting the residential sectors emissions by 11 to 18 per cent from 1990 levels by 2020.
