Low carbon vehicle scheme launched

Low carbon vehicle scheme launched
A new project which will focus on the development of low carbon vehicles kicked off today.

Costing £100 million, the five-year Low Carbon Vehicle Integrated Regional Delivery Programme will involve the government at both a national and local level.

The money will be put towards speeding up the production of low carbon vehicles and establishing an industry led advisory panel which will steer the direction of the new technology.

It also hopes to increase the involvement of universities in the development of green technology and "accelerate the exploitation of more radical approaches to decarbonising road vehicles".

The government will be partnering with One North East on the project and will base the research in the north-east region.

Speaking about the programme, One North East chairman Margaret Fay, said: "This will see us building on our automotive assets and harnessing the expertise in our universities to put the north-east and the UK at the forefront of global green vehicle production."
