Low carbon farmers could be awarded

Low carbon farmers could be awarded
Ministers are thought to be considering sponsoring a low carbon award scheme for people in the farming industry.

Environment secretary Hilary Benn suggested the idea earlier this week at the Oxford Farming Conference, claiming it would help promote greener agriculture.

After the event, a spokesman for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs confirmed that the possibility of creating an award for eco-friendly farmers was a possibility.

"There are a lot of farming awards around, but none for sustainable farming," he told Business Green.com.

"What the minister has said is that if someone wants to put one forward the government would be very interested in sponsoring it."

Mr Benn also told delegates that he was keen to introduce green labels on food products, making it easier for consumers to know when they are purchasing home-grown produce.

The Carbon Trust welcomed Mr Benn's calls for clearer information on the origin of products.

The Trust's Euan Murray told the website: "Our research shows that consumers are increasingly demanding this information, so greater transparency across the board can only be a good thing."
