Low carbon economy by 2050 is feasible, report claims
Published last week in a special edition of the journal Climate Policy, the study was conducted by the Japan-UK Low Carbon Society.

The UK Energy Research Centre reported that the project's main focus was an international modelling exercise which focused on developing countries.

Among the scenarios examined in the project was a case in which global greenhouse gases were reduced by 50 per cent by the year 2050.

Modelling activities undertaken by the society indicated that such a reduction is feasible, with energy efficiency, new technology and consumer responses set to play crucial roles in the reduction of carbon dioxide.

"We believe that the results of this international modelling exercise will be valuable to national and international policy-makers and can usefully inform the discussions on the Gleneagles Dialogue during Japan's G8 presidency", said Jim Skea, research director at the UK Energy Research Centre.

According to the study, while the deployment of low carbon technologies and lifestyle alterations will play a key role in creating a low carbon society in the developed world, developing countries will need to adopt a carbon strategy in line with their projected rate of economic growth.

The annual G8 Summit is set to take place next week in Japan.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18662509-ADNFCR
