Long-term climate change predictions published
Long-term climate predictions have shown sea levels could rise 13 feet within the next 1,000 years.

Published in Nature Geoscience, the report is the first to look at the effects of climate change over the next millennium.

Using computer imaging, the study also looked at the effect of implementing zero emissions standards in the years 2010 and 2100.

Areas in the northern hemisphere were shown to have fared better under these conditions, with the effects of climate change eventually reversing in Canada.

However, the models also showed desertification would take place in large regions of North Africa, with land drying out by up to 30 percent.

If global warming continues, the West Antarctic ice sheet will collapse by the year 3000, the researchers found.

Professor Shawn Marshall, from the University of Calgary in Canada, the leader of the study, said: "The global ocean and parts of the southern hemisphere have much more inertia, such that change occurs more slowly," adding this means some oceans in the south Atlantic are only beginning to see the effects of warming now.

Last year, the Met Office halved its worst-case scenario for rising sea levels from 13ft to 6ft 6ins. ADNFCR-1235-ID-800331663-ADNFCR
