Light bulb plans please Defra
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has commended the European Union's (EU) decision to start phasing out the use of incandescent light bulbs.

This scheme will begin at the start of next month and will save huge amounts of energy.

Defra claimed that 95 per cent of incandescent light bulbs energy is wasted on heat and new types of bulb could be far more energy efficient.

Dan Norris, environment minister, said: "We are glad the EU has put this measure in place to stop the waste of energy and money from old fashioned high energy bulbs.

"The UK has had a successful voluntary initiative in place for a few years, and now the rest of the EU will follow suit on a mandatory basis."

He went on to say that making the changeover across Europe could save one million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year by 2020.

A voluntary initiative to cut incandescent light bulb use was started in 2007.
