Lifestyles negating carbon reduction efforts

Lifestyles negating carbon reduction efforts
The most economically-developed nations must cut out the "wasteful and luxurious" lifestyles of their residents and lead the way on reducing CO2 emissions, experts have claimed.

Speaking at a summit on climate change in the Australian capital of Canberra this week, Chinese scientists suggested that a global solution requires an approach that factors emissions on a per capita basis.

They pointed out that China has the highest total emissions of any country in the world, but added that its per capita carbon output is only one-fifth of its Pacific neighbour's.

The Australian newspaper quoted the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Professor Pan Jiahua as suggesting that solutions based on per capita emissions could become central to China's approach on CO2 reduction.

"So far, from the feedback I have received, they seem somewhat friendly to this approach," he said.

Professor Pan also claimed that Australia's target for reductions on 2000 levels of between 5 and 15 per cent by 2020 are "certainly insufficient".

The expert added that it sets a "very bad example for developing countries" by undermining targets established by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Recently, a study commissioned by Friends of the Earth suggested that the UK should also adopt higher carbon reduction targets than those to which it has agreed.
