IT industry taking varied approach to cutting CO2

IT industry taking varied approach to cutting CO2
IT firms across the globe are adopting a host of different approaches to slashing their CO2 emissions, a new report shows.

The analysis, produced by Verdantix, was based on an in-depth comparison of the 14 largest IT firms and found vastly different levels of maturity in carbon management strategies.

"Marketing and sustainability leaders are wrestling with the impact of the growth in cloud computing and data centre outsourcing services on their carbon footprint," Verdantix director David Metcalfe explained.

Business models were said to have had a "profound impact" on strategy, with those firms with manufacturing arms producing greater levels of CO2 emissions than those purely offering IT services.

The report recommended firms should report emissions from different arms separately to provide better opportunities for comparability.

BT and Capgemini UK were found to have two of the most advanced carbon management networks, due to the strong CO2 reduction agenda in Britain. This led Verdantix to conclude the location for energy-consuming assets was important in determining reduction plans.

Twelve of the 14 firms had set absolute reduction targets.

Earlier this year, BT revealed its green procurement strategy, which required all suppliers to show they are taking steps to reduce their CO2 emissions.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800571393-ADNFCR
