Investment in waste management 'could cut more CO2 than wind energy'

Investment in waste management 'could cut more CO2 than wind energy'
Investment in waste management will produce greater emissions cuts than supporting wind energy, a new report has claimed.

Delivering Green Growth - Don't Waste the Opportunity, published by the Environmental Services Association (ESA), calls on the government to offer the same level of financial support for waste management as it does renewable energy.

It claims £1 billion invested in infrastructure, such as recycling and energy from waste plants, will bring 3,000 jobs and CO2 savings of four million tonnes, compared to 650 jobs and 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 from that level of financial backing for the wind industry.

Matthew Farrow, director of policy at the ESA, said the government has been focussing too closely on the renewable energy and electric vehicle sectors.

"Important as these may be, with the economy stumbling and having just adopted very tough carbon budgets, the government is missing a trick if it does not act to realise the potential of the waste management sector," he added.

The ESA claims the waste management and secondary resources industry has so far managed to quadruple England's domestic recycling rates over the last ten years and produces a third of the UK's renewable energy.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800577812-ADNFCR

Waste is not renewable: the clue is in the name. The ESA would serve a better purpose if it focused on changing the way we think about our industrial processes so that no waste is produced at all. See Cradle to Cradle by McDonough & Braungart.
