Householders can check online smart meter

Householders can check online smart meter
Households that want to keep track of the costs of their energy consumption but haven't installed a smart meter can turn to the internet for a solution.

A new online 'Smart Meter' has been launched which will allow users to monitor their gas and electricity costs at any interval they choose.

The new site asks users to enter two meter readings for either gas or electricity use and it will tell them the cost of the energy they have used.

Graham Self, director at UKPower.co.uk, said: "This will help consumers to budget more effectively as they will be able to monitor energy costs rather than waiting for bills to come through the door."

The government has announced plans to make the installation of smart meters in all homes compulsory by 2020.

It is part of a drive to reduce the country's energy consumption in a bid to cut carbon emissions by 20 per cent by 2020 and achieve a target of generating 15 per cent of electricity from renewables in the same time period.
