Groundbreaking green parking scheme in Richmond
Richmond Council has extended its policy of basing parking fees on vehicle carbon emissions.

Since yesterday (October 1st), all cars that park in Richmond upon Thames have their CO2 levels assessed to determine how much drivers have to pay.

The environmental initiative is intended to encourage the use of low carbon transport, with cars using low carbon fuel being rewarded with lower parking charges.

This project is the first of its kind in the UK and has been welcomed by councillor David Trigg, cabinet member of traffic, transport and parking at the council.

He said: "We hope this scheme will encourage more motorists to drive less polluting cars.

"It has taken us a while to get to where we can offer differential parking charges to all motorists parking in our bays and ground level car parks in the borough but I am delighted that we can now do this."

The scheme is expected to be extended to multi-storey car parks by the end of 2009.
