Green transport projects receive funding

Green transport projects receive funding
Green transport schemes across the UK have been given a £155 million investment boost from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

The government announced that 39 projects covering eight regions of the UK have been awarded cash in the scheme's first round of funding.

Among the projects receiving investment were a South Yorkshire scheme to help those in rural areas travel to work by cycle or scooter, expansion of a park and ride scheme in Oxford and a new rail station in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Hampshire is set to receive a package of measures, including an electric vehicle charging infrastructure, while projects in Plymouth and Lowestoft will also receive cash.

"We have empowered local authorities to create packages of sustainable initiatives that are tailored for their local areas, and this is only the beginning – even more funding will be announced next summer following a second round of bids," transport minister Norman Baker said.

The announcement comes following the release of a study by EDF and Imperial College London, which found 32.7 million tonnes of CO2 are emitted each year by rush hour traffic.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800614134-ADNFCR
