Green tariff criteria could mislead consumers

Green tariff criteria could mislead consumers
Consumers may be misled about the environmental benefits of offsetting under the new green tariff certification scheme, claims one energy supplier.

Ofgem launched the venture yesterday (February 9th) with the green energy scheme, an independent panel who verify the environmental credentials of energy suppliers.

Companies will have to prove they reduce the carbon footprint created by their product, through offsetting or investing money in renewable energy projects.

Ecotricity founder Dale Vince said yesterday that the criteria effectively excluded his own company, which generates almost 50 percent of its own energy and spent £388 a year for each customer on average building renewable energy projects.

Also, the high costs are likely to turn green electricity into a premium product only available to those not struggling with energy bills, he claimed.

According to the green energy supplier, customers will be charged approximately £25 a year for some of the offsetting schemes – some of which, they claim, will have less impact for the long-term than "putting in an energy-saving lightbulb costing £1.50."

Mr Vince said yesterday: "This all a real distraction from the real job at hand, which is to change where Britain gets its energy from.

"The Big Six suppliers are in an oligopoly, they are simply not as interested in investing in Britain' s long-term future as they are in short-term profits for shareholders."
