Green Party questions British vehicle scrappage scheme

Green Party questions British vehicle scrappage scheme
Britain's new vehicle scrappage scheme will do little to create jobs or help reduce carbon emissions from road transport, it has been warned.

The programme, which was unveiled as part of Alistair Darling's new Budget, provides a discount of up to £2,000 of finance to consumers choosing to invest in a more fuel-efficient vehicle.

Although the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) welcomed the ten-month scheme, suggesting that it could make a significant difference to motorists and help the new car market, it has had a mixed reception from environmental groups.

According to the Green Party of England and Wales, the vehicle scrappage programme, which follows in the footsteps of similar schemes in countries such as France and Germany, could result in little positive impact.

Darren Johnson, a member of the party from the London Assembly, said: "There are far better ways of creating jobs and helping our environment than simply giving people money to buy new cars."

In Germany, the scheme has not delivered the environmental benefits that were hoped for, he claimed, suggesting that many motorists have used the financial incentive to "trade up to bigger, more polluting cars".

Approximately £300 million has been set aside for the vehicle scrappage scheme, which applies to cars that are over 10 years old. Drivers of commercial vans up to 3.5 tonnes can also apply for the discount.

The SMMT estimates that the average carbon dioxide emissions produced by a new car fell by 13.1 percent between 1997 and 2008, with total emissions from all UK cars declining by 4.7 percent over the past decade.
