Green MEP: Renewables development is not a choice

Green MEP: Renewables development is not a choice
Many European countries still view the development of renewable energy as a choice, when it is in fact a necessity, according to one MEP.

Jean Lambert, an MEP for the Green Party, which won its first seat in the UK parliament in the general election this year, said that "the only real green solution to climate change is renewable energy".

The European Union's target is for a 20 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2020, although a number of countries, including the UK, are calling for this to be raised to 30 percent.

Ms Lambert cited Germany, which currently produces 16 percent of its energy from renewable sources, as an example, claiming at that it "sets a precedent".

She added that the UK boasts "some of the best resources in Europe" for the development of renewable energy.

"Wind power at sea alone could meet our electricity needs three times over and bring thousands of jobs to the UK if we also get involved in manufacturing," Ms Lambert explained, but added that currently the country is currently falling "woefully short" of its potential.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800071729-ADNFCR
