Green ICT can save money as well as energy
When it comes to information technology and communications (ICT) in businesses, green initiatives can deliver cost savings as well as energy ones, it has been claimed.
According to BusinessGreen.com, drives for energy efficiency in technology are anything but incompatible with the pressing need for cost-effectiveness in the public and private sectors.
James Murray, editor of the website, suggested that revenues from green ICT have remained robust in the current economic climate because of the savings they can deliver.
He said: "It's not easy for any capital project to get through at the moment, that much is blindingly obvious, but these are effectively cost-saving projects.
"In ICT, in particular, you're talking about knocking five or six figure sums off of energy bills, if not more."
His comments came following a report by Global Action Plan, which revealed that two-thirds of businesses that are aware of the government's Greening ICT Strategy are concerned the targets will be difficult to meet.
Whitehall published its ICT plans in July 2008 and intends to make its own technology's energy usage completely carbon-neutral by 2012.http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/media/141533/greening_gov...
