Green Claims guidelines to be updated

Green Claims guidelines to be updated
The 'Green Claims' code from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is to be revised, the department has announced.

A steering group has been set up to update the code which was designed to guide businesses in advertising their products as 'green', while protecting consumers from inaccurate or misleading claims.

Defra suggested that updating the code with the help of organisations such as the Advertising Standards Authority, Forum for the Future and the Sustainable Development Commission, would boost consumer confidence.

Lord Philip Hunt, minister for sustainable development, said: "Consumers are often confronted with all sorts of 'green' claims by companies and products. Working with industry and updating the 'Green Claims' Code will support business to ensure that their claims are genuine and meaningful. It will also reassure consumers that when a green claim is made, they can feel confident it is truthful."

Energy regulator Ofgem recently published its own guidelines for the marketing of electricity tariffs as 'green'.

These new rules, endorsed by the only 100 per cent renewable firm, Good Energy, require energy companies to demonstrate that they are doing more for the environment on behalf of the customer than they are legally obliged to if they plan to market a tariff as environmentally friendly.
