Green buses encouraged in England through new grant

Green buses encouraged in England through new grant
The UK's Department for Transport (DfT) has launched a £30 million fund to encourage companies to buy energy-efficient, low-carbon buses.

Commercial bus operators and councils will be able to apply for a portion of the money, which is being offered as part of the government's wider strategy to lower emissions in the transport sector.

New transport secretary Andrew Adonis explained that as more green buses are sold prices should fall, making them more accessible to smaller operators.

He said: "CO2 emissions from buses have increased significantly over the last ten years.

"For the sake of our environment and the air quality in our towns and cities it's important to encourage the industry to move towards low-carbon models."

Over the next two years, the DfT intends its fund to help towards the purchase of several hundred low-carbon buses, while also stimulating new jobs in the green technology and engineering sectors.

It estimated that energy efficient buses use 30 percent less fuel than regular models and emit up to a third less CO2.
