Government should shape low carbon economy

Government should shape low carbon economy
Government, not the free market, should be responsible for shaping and driving the transition to a low-carbon economy, according to the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

Echoing various recent reports, the TUC called on the government to ease the pain of the economic downturn by helping develop a greener economy.

At the same time as creating thousands of jobs could and cutting emissions, creating a low carbon workforce could also "limit the length and severity of the current recession".

A pamphlet from the TUC urged the government to take an active role and warned against "taking a back seat and leaving it to the market to set the pace of transition to a green economy".

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "Government action now to invest in low carbon technologies and in the skills to develop a new green workforce should mean the current recession is much shorter and shallower for UK businesses."

Last year the Confederation of British Industry urged businesses and politicians not to use the economic downturn as a way to avoid action on climate change.
