Government programme needs more promotion
A government initiative to improve the heat efficiency and reduce the carbon emissions of homes should receive greater promotion, according to green campaigners.
The Home Energy Saving Programme, launched in September, offers free or discounted insulation to homes, but not enough people have taken it up, according to the WWF.
Speaking at the Best (Eco) Footprint Forward debate at the Grand Designs Live show in Birmingham, WWF senior campaigns officer for transport Lucy Bertenshaw, said unless there was more communication about the programme, take-up would remain low.
She said: "There might be financial incentives but if no-one knows about them then people won't take them up. That is one of the big challenges; to get people to know more about these deals."
According to the Energy Saving Trust, which has launched Energy Saving Week today, if all homes had cavity wall insulation, almost a billion pounds would be saved on domestic energy bills a year.
