Google using more than just carbon offsetting

Google using more than just carbon offsetting
Information communications and technology giant Google has claimed that carbon offsetting schemes are only a short-term means of achieving carbon neutrality.

Writing on the company's official blog, Bill Weihl insisted that Google will continue to invest in carbon offsetting, but is also advocating the development of "utility-scale" renewable energy schemes.

The green energy tsar's comments came following the publication of an article in the Guardian, which claimed that web companies must work to limit the internet's carbon footprint.

In the piece, Bobbie Johnson warned that scientists believe the electricity requirements of the web are growing by more than ten percent a year - something which carbon offsetting does not address.

However, Mr Weihl reiterated Google's long-term commitment to lowering carbon emissions.

"While we do plan to continue with the purchase of offsets to neutralize the emissions we cannot eliminate through efficiency or renewable energy, our green team will focus on what we do best - engineering technology solutions," he said.

The Google representative also noted that the company is working to produce the world's most efficient servers and data centres.

Well done, Google! Offsets are great when you've done everything possible to reduce your footprint.
